API Keys

API keys are optional but unlock additional features. They are configured in the Admin Panel → Settings and shared with all users automatically.

Google Maps — Places API

Enables place search, auto-fill details (ratings, reviews, opening hours), and place photos.

Setup

  1. Go to Google Cloud Console
  2. Create a new project (or use an existing one)
  3. Enable the Places API (New) under APIs & Services
  4. Create an API key under Credentials
  5. (Recommended) Restrict the key to the Places API only
  6. In TREK: Admin Panel → Settings → Google Maps API Key → paste and save
  7. Click Validate to test the key

Without Google API

TREK works without a Google Maps API key:

  • Place search falls back to OpenStreetMap (Nominatim) — free, no signup required
  • Place photos are fetched from Wikimedia Commons via OpenStreetMap data
  • Opening hours, website, phone are enriched from OpenStreetMap via the Overpass API
  • A hint is shown in the place form when using the OSM fallback

Cost

Google offers $200/month free credit. Typical usage for personal trip planning stays well within the free tier. See Google Maps pricing.

Weather — Open-Meteo (no key required)

TREK uses Open-Meteo for weather data. Open-Meteo is a free, open-source weather service — no API key or signup required. Weather works out of the box.

What you get

  • 16-day forecast — Real weather forecasts for the next 16 days
  • Historical climate averages — For days beyond the 16-day forecast, TREK shows average temperatures from the last 85 years as a fallback (shown with Ø prefix)
  • Automatic upgrade — Climate averages are automatically replaced with real forecast data once the trip date is within the 16-day window
  • Detailed hourly weather — Click a day header to see hourly temperature, precipitation, wind, humidity, sunrise/sunset
  • Weather descriptions match the selected app language

How it works

Weather is displayed per day in the trip planner. The location is determined by the first place with coordinates assigned to that day. If no place is assigned, any place from the trip's place list is used as a reference.

Limits

  • 10,000 API calls/day (free, non-commercial use)
  • No API key needed — works immediately after installation
  • Weather data is cached (1h for forecast, 15m for current, 24h for climate)

Validating Keys

In the admin settings you can validate your Google Maps API key. TREK will test the key against the real API and show a green checkmark if it works. The Validate button auto-saves the key before testing.
